From 1940 through 1963, Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS) staged operettas and musicals at the Malkin Bowl. A.S., the board superintendent, founded the inaugural TUTS under the direction of the Vancouver Park Board. E.V. Wootten, Basil Horsfall, a conductor, and Wootten Young were given the go-ahead by Gordon Hilker to put on a show in Stanley Park's Malkin Bowl, a band shell used for summer performances. Young and Stanley Bligh attempted to build an outdoor theater at Brockton Oval in the 1930s, and these endeavors served as the model for TUTS.
