A reservoir called Lake Houston is located on the San Jacinto River 15 miles northeast of Houston, Texas's city center. The city of Houston's main source of municipal water is the reservoir. Located on the west bank, between the settlements of Kingwood, Atascocita, and Humble; to the south, Sheldon; and to the east, Crosby and Huffman. A section of the southern bank along Dwight D. Eisenhower Park is divided by an earthen dam. The dam was built in 1953 by the City of Houston to impound a reservoir in place of Sheldon Lake, the city's main water supply at the time. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department purchased Sheldon Lake from the city to be used as a public fishing area and a sanctuary for ducks. The lake is a popular destination for boating and fishing. At the lake's northernmost point, Lake Houston Wilderness Park offers cabin rentals, camping options, a kayak launch, and hiking and biking paths.
