Buffalo Bayou, the 52-mile-long, leisurely-moving waterway where the City of Houston was first established in 1836, is now a popular location for outdoor enjoyment close to downtown Houston. It is still in its natural state and is home to a remarkably diversified urban ecology that supports several local plant and animal species.

Buffalo Bayou is a body of water with a slow current that runs through Houston, Texas, in Harris County. It originates in the prairie surrounding Katy, Fort Bend County, and runs roughly 53 miles (85 km) east through the Houston Texas Ship Channel into Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. This river was formed 18,000 years ago.

For a 10-square-mile section of Buffalo Bayou that runs from Shepherd Drive to the Port of Houston Turning Basin, Buffalo Bayou Partnership has been actively pursuing plans and initiatives for more than 30 years.

Metro Houston, Buffalo Bayou Partnership began a historic planning project with a nationally renowned consultant team led by Jane Thompson (Thompson Design Group-Boston), a pioneer in waterfront development around the world, with the belief that the millennium was the ideal time to dream and imagine BIG. The organization's 20-year Master Plan, Buffalo Bayou and Beyond, was published in 2002 and advocates for Buffalo Bayou to be a key regional amenity. We are pleased that by combining conservation and development and developing projects that serve several purposes—recreation, flood management, and ecosystem restoration—our restoration and revitalization work has adhered to this plan's main goals and planning concepts. Public art, lighting, and conservation management are just a few of the areas for which site-specific designs have been finished.

The Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern was a former drinking water reservoir constructed in 1926. The 87,500 square foot subterranean reservoir was in use for decades before an unfixable leak was found, and it was decommissioned in 2007.

Buffalo Bayou Partnership refurbished and repurposed the Cistern into a wonderful public space after realizing the value of this relic. The Cistern offers tours that focus on the architecture and history of the area in addition to housing a comprehensive schedule of shifting art pieces.
