Pershing - Government Hill
Since 1881, the commanding officers of Fort Sam Houston have lived in Pershing House. The military installation is part of Joint Base San Antonio and is situated in Bexar County in San Antonio, Texas. On July 30, 1974, the home was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The United States Army established a steadfast presence in what was then known as the Department of Texas after Texas was annexed by the Union in 1845, providing a line of defense during the 1846–1848 Mexican–American War and the Texas–Indian Wars, which came to an end in 1875 with the surrender of Comanche chief Quanah Parker at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Since John J. Pershing took command of the base in 1917 after taking part in the Pancho Villa Expedition, the house has been known by its current name. The names of all the occupants from 1881 through 1973 are listed on two brass-plated plaques that were first made in the 1950s by Julia Cotton White, the wife of General Isaac D. White, who was then in charge of the base. She gave them to Fort Sam Houston as a gift, and subsequent owners continued to maintain them at least until 1973, when the home was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Pershing personally oversaw the 1918 Meuse-Argonne attack, which was a resounding victory. Pershing moved 600,000 soldiers to northern France during the Meuse-Argonne offensive with exceptional organization. Until an armistice was declared on November 11, 1918, a cautious march continued across the Argonne.
Upon his return to the country in 1919, Black Jack Pershing was acclaimed as a national hero.
