In 1974, the museum was opened as a Cavalry Museum. At the time, it primarily discussed "the horseback history of the West." The El Paso Museum of Art director oversaw the institution until the El Paso Museum of History recruited its own director in December 1990. The name of the institution was changed to the El Paso Museum of History in 1980. The museum was included in a bond issue to create a new building in 2000 since the existing structure was deemed inadequate and in an undesirable location. The new building, located downtown, opened on June 16, 2007, and within a year the museum had more than 30,000 visitors. It is said that the museum contributed to "rejuvenating downtown El Paso."
