The largest privately owned, non-profit zoo in the United States, the Phoenix Zoo opened its doors in 1962. The zoo, which is based in Phoenix, Arizona, and runs on 125 acres of land in the Papago Park neighborhood of Phoenix, was established by Robert Maytag, a member of the Maytag family.

The Arizona Trail, the Africa Trail, the Tropics Trail, and the Discovery/Trail Children's are the four main themed zones, or "trails," of the Phoenix Zoo where guests can view exhibits that reflect various parts of the world and their natural species.

Depending on the size, age, and pace of your group, we advise allowing three hours to tour the entire Zoo. Some creatures may be hard to observe and visitors may need to spend more time observing because our exhibits are designed to reflect the animals' natural habitats.

Over 1,400 species are on show in the zoo, which has 2.5 miles (4.0 km) of walking paths. It is divided into four main themed areas or trails: the Arizona Trail, which features plants and animals native to the American Southwest; the Africa Trail, which features animals from that continent; the Tropics Trail, which features inhabitants of tropical rainforests; and the Children's Trail, which also has a petting zoo.
