Phoenix Zoo

The largest privately owned, non-profit zoo in the United States, the Phoenix Zoo opened its doors in 1962. The zoo, which is based in Phoenix, Arizona, and runs on 125 acres of land in the Papago Park neighborhood of Phoenix, was established by Robert Maytag, a member of the Maytag family.

The Arizona Trail, the Africa Trail, the Tropics Trail, and the Discovery/Trail Children's are the four main themed zones, or "trails," of the Phoenix Zoo where guests can view exhibits that reflect various parts of the world and their natural species.

Depending on the size, age, and pace of your group, we advise allowing three hours to tour the entire Zoo. Some creatures may be hard to observe and visitors may need to spend more time observing because our exhibits are designed to reflect the animals' natural habitats.

Over 1,400 species are on show in the zoo, which has 2.5 miles (4.0 km) of walking paths. It is divided into four main themed areas or trails: the Arizona Trail, which features plants and animals native to the American Southwest; the Africa Trail, which features animals from that continent; the Tropics Trail, which features inhabitants of tropical rainforests; and the Children's Trail, which also has a petting zoo.

outdoor excursions. enduring memories We Are a Zoo, That's Us! Since its founding in 1962, the Phoenix Zoo has inspired and motivated visitors from all over the world to protect nature. The 125-acre Papago Park Zoo is tucked away as a magical site of wonder, imagination, and discovery. It is unique in the Valley because it has over 3,000 creatures, including Bornean orangutans, Asian elephants, Sumatran tigers, Komodo dragons, Masai giraffes, and many more!

Since its establishment, the zoo has prioritized conservation. Soon after it opened, it housed what were believed to be the last few Arabian oryx, which helped establish the foundation for Operation Oryx's global herd and finally allowed the species' return into the wild. It presently has a sanctuary for unwanted or endangered animals.

Your visit will be one that the whole family will remember thanks to the outdoor cafés, boutiques, luxuriant gardens, waterscapes, and thrilling up-close animal experiences like Stingray Bay. The Endangered Species Carousel and the Safari Cruiser are two additional must-attend attractions. As a non-profit organization, the Zoo primarily depends on admissions, membership fees, contributions, and sponsorships to maintain its conservation efforts, educational programs, and animal care. Join us today to support this irreplaceable Valley treasure!
