Bechtler Museum of Modern Art

A 36,500 square foot museum space in Charlotte, NC, devoted to the display of modern art from the middle of the 20th century. The brand-new Levine Center for the Arts in Uptown houses the museum of modern art. The museum's structure was created by Mario Botta, an architect.

The museum bears the name of Andreas Bechtler's family, a Swiss-born Charlotte resident who amassed and inherited a collection of more than 1,400 pieces of art by prominent personalities in 20th-century modernism. On January 2, 2010, Andreas Bechtler and Anthony Foxx, a former mayor of Charlotte, attended the opening of the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art.

From Wednesday through Monday, the museum is still accessible to guests starting at 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Being a member of the Blue Star Museums, Bechtler offers perpetually FREE entrance to active-duty service members and their families. The price of admission for everyone else is $5 to $9.

Mario Botta, a Swiss architect who previously designed the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, designed the museum, which is only the second in the nation.

The four-story building's soaring glass atrium, which runs through its center and diffuses natural light throughout the whole structure, is a prominent design feature. There might be visual interaction between spaces because of the open atrium. A vaulted skylight system and an engulfing terra cotta facade are additional noteworthy elements.
