Ballantyne East

On the southside of Charlotte, North Carolina, Ballantyne is a neighborhood and growing edge city that takes up 2,000 acres (8.1 km2) of property close to the South Carolina state line. The largest Catholic congregation in the United States, St. Matthew Catholic Church, is located in the area. Wingate University announced in June 2013 that it was moving its Matthews campus to Ballantyne.

Big Rock Nature Preserve, a wooded area divided by a stream and home to enormous granite boulders as well as a variety of animal and plant species, is located in the peaceful residential suburb of Ballantyne East. There is an 18-hole public course, a driving range, a practice area, and a pro shop at The Golf Club at Ballantyne. There are numerous informal American and Asian restaurants in the area.

A 171,000 square foot mixed-use development is called Ballantyne Village (excluding the Panorama Tower). Prior to this, it was acquired for $26 million in 2013 by Charlotte-based Vision Ventures and Mount Vernon Asset Management. It has a variety of eateries, shops selling personal care products, 25,000 square feet of office space, and an additional 53,000 square feet of office space being built in the vicinity of the Regal Ballantyne Village, which will close in 2020.

Ballantyne was formerly a sizable hunting preserve held by the Harris family, who are descended from the late governor of North Carolina, Cameron A. Morrison. One of the most prosperous master-planned communities in the US is Ballantyne Corporate Park, which was founded in 1992 by Johnny Harris and his brother-in-law Smoky Bissell. The largest rezone in the annals of Mecklenburg county was carried out by Harris on 2,000 acres. The 610 acres that subsequently became the Ballantyne Country Club and the associated housing development had already been acquired by another developer, Crescent Resources.
