Red Rock Canyon Open Space

Colorado Springs' Red Rock Canyon Open Space is a 1,474-acre city park. It is located on the west side of the city, south of US and next to Manitou Springs. Route 24. A collection of parallel mountains and degraded canyons make up the park. The majority of the other rock formations connected to the geology of the Colorado Front Range can be reached within a short walking distance, even though these ridges, which are relatively low compared to others in the area, include a continuation of the same sandstone rocks of the Fountain and Lyons formations that make up the Garden of the Gods a few miles to the north.

Between Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs is the 1,474-acre city park known as Red Rock Canyon Open Space. Red Rock Canyon Open Space has 11 clearly designated paths that range in length from 1.7 to 5.4 miles and in altitude from 6,141 to 6,866 feet. There are trails for every skill level, a place for dogs to run free, and stunning vistas of the Garden of the Gods.

The Fountain Formation sandstone rocks that make up Garden of the Gods to the north are continued in the park as a sequence of parallel red rock ridges (referred to as "hogbacks") and eroded canyons. The Quarry Pass and its surrounding paths, through and over the towering red rock sandstone cliffs, and the area between the hogbacks on the park's east side are the two primary portions of the open space. The Garden of the Gods Visitors Center is where you must register if you plan to climb in the park.

The park has a number of reclaimed former industrial sites, such as quarries, gravel pits, a gold refining mill, and a 53-acre landfill, rather than being virgin conservation land. John George Bock acquired the land parcels in the 1920s and 1930s individually, and the city of Colorado Springs acquired them in 2003 for use as a recreational area.
